Khalji Masjid also known as the Hazirawali Masjid is an ancient mosque built during the Muslim rule in India in Rajasthan. The mosque was in complete dilapidated state until recently when it was repaired and restored.
Architecture of Khalji Masjid
Khalji Masjid has an inscription engraved on it according to which the mosque was built during the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq on 10th Sha`ban 780/2nd December, 1378. Presently the external part of the small prayer chamber is visible that measures 8.30 x 5.10 m. from outside. Its walls are almost 80 cm. thick and had been constructed with reused materials of other temples.
A single mirab adorns the centre of the quibla wall. It also has a niche in the northern and southern walls. The prayer hall has been constructed on a plinth measuring 80 cms above the ground. The use of a moulded string course above it adds on to its grace. The old stones have been artistically carved and bedecked with courses of garlands and the disc patterns embellish the surface of the plinth. The original wall measures 1.20 metres above the plinth and has been further decorated with another string course of foliated garlands. The marvellously carved stones with different types of motifs speak of the artistic mastery of the craftsmen of the ancient period. The mihrab has been better preserved in comparison to the walls and stands up to about 2 metres. The walls, roof, lobed arches in front of the prayer chamber and the arch of the mihrab all have been rebuilt. The reconstructed walls of the mosque are thinner than the original walls. The new walls have wide niches on the interior. An inscription has been inscribed above the mihrab and it is visible in spite of the presence of an arch.
