Introduction

Kausika, Son of VasudevaKausika, also spelled Kaushika, is a figure in Hindu mythology recognized as the half-brother of Lord Krishna, as stated in the epic Mahabharata. According to the Vishnu Purana, he is the only son born to Vasudeva, the prominent Yadu prince and father of Krishna, and Vasudeva’s wife Vaishali. Although the major narratives of Hindu mythology primarily focus on his half-brothers, Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama, Kausika is listed among the many children of Vasudeva. His inclusion in the Vishnu Purana highlights his place within the extended Yadava lineage. Ancient Hindu texts highlight his role in the broader genealogical tradition surrounding Krishna's family. Kausika is portrayed as a minor character in Mahabharata.

Genealogy of Yadava Dynasty

Yadavas were an ancient Indian people traditionally believed to have descended from Yadu, the legendary king of the Chandravamsha (Lunar) dynasty. They were not a single tribe but a confederation of several clans that played a significant role in the historical and mythological traditions of ancient India.

The Mahabharata and the Puranas describe the Yadavas as the rulers of the Mathura region, where they were primarily engaged in pastoralism and cattle herding. According to these texts, increasing pressure from the Paurava rulers of Magadha, and possibly the Kurus, compelled the Yadavas to migrate from Mathura to Dvaraka, where they established a powerful kingdom under the leadership of Lord Krishna.

The Mahabharata further recounts that following the death of Lord Krishna, the Yadavas abandoned Dvaraka and the surrounding regions of Gujarat. Led by Arjuna, the surviving members of the community journeyed northward but were attacked during their migration, resulting in the fragmentation of the confederation. Over time, the dispersed Yadava clans spread across various parts of the Indian subcontinent, including the Aravalli region, Gujarat, the Narmada valley, the northern Deccan, and the eastern Ganges valley
