Karenghar Palace is a historical monument nestled in the Assam state of India. It is the last remnant of the Ahom`s pre-Sivasagar capital. It is a unique four-storey structure that rises like a sharpened, stepped pyramid above a forest-and-paddy setting.

It is located in Garhgaon, 15 km from present-day Sivasagar, in Upper Assam. It is situated on the bank of the Dikhow River.
History of Karenghar Palace
According to some historical chronicles, Rudra Singha (1696-1714 AD) founded the city of Rangpur in 1698 AD. He had constructed a wooden palace. The present brick structure was built by Rajeswara Singha, who was his successor.
Architecture of Karenghar Palace
Karenghar palace is one of the grandest examples of Ahom architecture. It is built in a north-south axis. The either ends and the middle part has long annexes. The floor area is open except the octagonal small temple, guard room, three large chambers and a big hall with courtyard. The terrace has several post holes which indicate the practice of erecting temporary shades for ceremonial gatherings. Excavations reveal that a structure made of impermanent material existed at this site.

It is well connected via railway, airway and roadway. The nearest railhead is Simaluguri which is 16km away from the Sivasagar town. The closest International Airport is Guwahati. One can avail bus or taxi services from any corner of the place to reach Karenghar Palace.
