Kamrupi Dance, Assamese Folk DanceKamrupi dance is a folk dance which has originated in ancient Kamrup forming one of the cultural norms of region. And in terms of dance, it has originated from Bhaona dance. In the olden days, Assam (state of India in the north-eastern region) was known as `Kamrup`. The Kamrupi dance was classified to give it a provincial touch as it had originated from Assam. Till now there is a district in the State by that name. The famous forms of Kamrupi dances are `Phalguni`, `Gita`, `Karnarjuna` and others.

Themes of Kamrupi Dance
Kamrupi dance essays various mythological stories through its performance. Like, one of the dramas essays the story of Phalguni. `Phalguni` is the other name of Arjuna. The drama depicts the story of how Arjuna was invited in heaven by the Gods to kill the demons. While fighting with the demons, Arjuna found it difficult to defeat them hence he took the aid of the `Pashupat` arrow which was gifted to him by Lord Shiva. With the application of the weapon he became successful in his mission and thus killed the demons.

Then the drama of Gita depicts the story of Arjuna unwilling to fight against his own relatives in the battle of Kurukshetra. Lord Krishna, who was his charioteer gave him the lessons on Gita and taught him about the doctrine of Karma. He revealed before Arjuna his true image of the Supreme God and preached that for him Arjuna was just a means and not the actual killer. Contented with Lord Krishna`s teachings Arjuna proceeded for the war and even won it.

Karnarjuna is another drama that enacts the fight between the two powerful warriors, Karan and Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It also illustrates the triumph of Arjuna over Karna.
