Kamalgad Fort

Kamalgad Fort is an ancient hill fortress which is located in Wai Taluka in the district of Satara in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The fort is also known as Kattalgad Fort.

The square shaped fort is also known as Lotus Fort, Kattalgad Fort and Bhelanja Fort. The site is situated almost 32 km from Satara and around 10 miles towards the west of Wai. The geographical coordinates of Kamalgad Fort is latitude 18° 05` N 74° 00` E. It is built at an altitude of 1,375 m (4,511 feet) above sea level.

History of Kamalgad Fort
The origin of the fortress is unknown. During the reign of the rulers of the Maratha Empire, Kamalgad Fort, Pandavgad Fort and other forts located in the region were maintained by a manager or Mokasaddar from Bijapur. Later the fortress was ceded to a detachment of British East India Company that was led by Major Thatcher in April 1818. During the reign of the British administration, the structure was utilized to execute prisoners of war.

Architecture of Kamalgad Fort
Kamalgad Fort covers a total area of around 4 acres and is bounded by steep rock. The fort area doesn`t consist of any walls and ramparts. Moreover there are no ruins of any buildings or any other structures in the vicinity. The site does not include any gateway either is uncommon for a fort in this territory. Probably the altitude and steep rock around the structure provided enough protection to the fort. However there is a hole which on the top which was perhaps used as a water cistern or a well.
