Jalalgarh Fort

Jalalgarh fort is situated at about 20 kilometres north of Purnia district in the state of Bihar. The fort is presently in ruins and has been estimated to be about 300 years old. The site was previously an island of in the old channel of the Kosi River. Archaeological evidences suggest that it was constructed by Syed Muhammed Jalaluddin Khan of the Khagra family. Mughal emperor Jahangir had conferred the title of `Raja` on Syed Muhammed Jalaluddin Khan. However some people also believe that the Nawab of Purnia, Saif Khan, built it in the year 1722.

The massive fort, named Jalalgarh fort is quadrangular in structure with high walls. These towering walls had helped greatly in the protection from Nepalese invasion. According to various experts, the fort had magnificent architecture and bears testimony of the excellent artistry prevalent in ancient times. Beautiful elements of both Hindu and Islamic architecture can be witnessed on its structural remains.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in January 2012, had made announcement for the repair and restoration of the ruined fort by the Government of Bihar. To revive the erstwhile glory of the ancient fort and to transform it into an inviting tourist destination, Purnia district authorities have been ordered to take up the restoration work.
