It is the only region in India that has the yellow sandstone. That is the reason why the city of Jaisalmer, lying within the district is also known as the Golden city.

Location of Jaisalmer: Located in the middle of the Thar Desert it is the largest district in Rajasthan. The width of Jaisalmer is 270 kilometers while its length is 186 kilometers. On the north the district forms its boundary with Bikaner in the north, in the east with Jodhpur and Bikaner and in the south by Barmer. On the west and southwest lies the Indian border with Pakistan.

History of Jaisalme: Maharawal Jaisal was the founder of this city. The district grew later. The history of Jaisalmer is steeped in legends. Its very foundation is based on the prophecies by lords.

Travel Information on Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer is accessible from Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and all other major cities of Rajasthan. While the nearest airport is located in Jodhpur the district is also well connected by road. Railways are also a convenient mode of transportation for reaching Jaisalmer.
