The Indian Subcontinent provides suitable habitats to various species of birds for residing and nesting. Orioles are no exception in this regard. Different types of Orioles have been recorded in India. These Orioles are described below.
Maroon Oriole
Maroon Oriole is a local resident of the Himalaya and north-east India. The dominant colors on the body of this Oriole are maroon and black. More specifically, the adult male can be identified in terms of a black head, neck and wings and glossy crimson-maroon color on its body. It has a chestnut-maroon tail. The female counterpart has slightly darker body. The female and immature male can be identified in terms of grayish-white underparts with black streaks. Across the range of Maroon Oriole, variance in body coloration has been traced. Those Orioles recorded in the Indian Subcontinent have duller colors on the body.
Indian Golden Oriole
Indian Golden Oriole breeds in the Indian Subcontinent. The northern populations of the species winter in southern India. The male Oriole is a bright golden yellow and jet black plumaged bird. There is a black eye stripe extending behind the eye of the bird. It has a large carpal patch on the wing and wide yellow tips to the secondaries and tertiaries. The wings and centre of tail are black in color. The female bird can be identified in terms of yellow-green upper body and dirty-white lower body. It has brownish-green wings. This bird is streaked in brown.
Black-Naped Oriole
The dominant color on the body of the Black-Naped Oriole is golden. It is called a rare visitor of the plains of Tamil Nadu. This bird has a strong pinkish bill. The eye stripe of the bird widens and meets the back of the neck, unlike the golden oriole which has a short and narrow eye-stripe. As the name of the bird may suggest, it has a black nape. It also has a broad black mask. The adult male Oriole has yellow tipped central tail feathers. The female counterpart has more greenish or olive mantle. Although the male and female birds are very similar, the wing lining of the female is more greenish. Subspecies diffuses has been recorded in many parts of South India as an uncommon migrant. It breeds in parts of India.
Black-Hooded Oriole
Black-Hooded Oriole is a resident breeder of India. As the name of the bird may suggest, it has a solid black hood. The dominant color on the body of the male bird is yellow. Apart from yellow, black color is present on the wings and centre of the tail. The female counterpart has greenish underparts.
