Hastings House

Hastings House, which is nearly 220 years old, is one of the monuments from British India. Located in the southern outskirts of Alipore in Kolkata, Hastings House had been the residence of Governor- General Warren Hastings who resided here since 1777 after his tenure.

Hastings House, Monument in KolkataHastings House is one of the heritage constructions that is located on the Judges Court Road of Alipore, Kolkata. Hastings house was originally the country house of Warren Hastings who was the Governor General of India from 1775-1785. This heritage building was later on bought as the state guest house by Lord Curzon who was the Viceroy and Governor General of India in 1901. The Hastings House is among the notable Heritage buildings of Kolkata which reflect the simple cubical western style construction of British period. Originally painted in white, the two storey building contains a number of living rooms in the ground floor along with a large hall in the upper floor which is accompanied with more rooms that provide huge space for accommodation. The building is further decorated with a handsome staircase which is polished with Madras chunam. This house is considered to be one of the most memorable constructions of the age which attracted Warren Hastings in his later age. Surrounded with beautiful gardens this building has been maintained as a tourist site under government supervision.

Hastings House was converted into Institute of Education for Women in 1954 that is affiliated with University of Calcutta for B-Ed courses. Thus, as a prominent building of Kolkata this building is now utilized as one of the educational institutions of the state.
