Hariyana Gharana is said to have been created by Swami Haridas. Haryana is a small village located in the Hoshiarpur district. Swami Haridas who belonged to this village is said to have trained Chhajju Ram Bhagat who is regarded as an eminent artist of Hariyana Gharana. Chhajju Ram Bhagat was a proficient Dhrupad singer. Another well-known singer Ram Vasudev Ragi alias Gujjar Bhagat was trained under Chhajju Ram Bhagat. Ram Vasudev earned a lot of fame in Dhrupad Gayaki. The credit for popularizing Hariyana Gayaki is attributed to Gujjar Bhagat who maintained the high standard of the Gharana. As a result of his laborious practice he had become an accomplished singer and earned much name and fame. His style of performance created charisma among the audience. Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Lakshmi narayan Garg was also highly impressed by his performance and gayaki style. Sangeetacharya Sri bala Guru nad Pandit Bhaskar rao Bakhle also appreciated the gayaki of Gujjar Bhagat.
Late Mohammed Hussain was one of the disciples of Gujjar Bhagat. He was popular for his performances in the Dhrupad. Another important artist Hidayat Hussain was also considered as an eminent artist. He at times accompanied Mohammed Hussain. The Jugalbandi style of performance was presented by Khuda Baksh and Ahmad Baksh. This pair earned much fame and was known for their simple compositions of great aesthetic value. The expression of the languages and the verses attracted the audiences.
The Hariyana Gharana later merged with Patiala Gharana and presently the descendants do not claim to be a part of the former Gharana. It is also believed that the name of the village Haryana was also derived from the name of Swami Haridas.
