Ghosale Gad Fort is located 8 km south of Roha town in Raigad District of Maharashtra. This narrow strip formed fort is 200 meters in width with a small hill around it. The fort was built to keep watch on the enemy and the trade route from Maval to the sea ports around.
History of Ghosale Gad Fort
The builder of the fort is still unknown. During 16th century it was under the control of Adil Shah of Bijapur. Then Shivaji Maharaj owned this fort in 1648, but Afzal Khan also tried to capture the fort and kill Shivaji. At that time, the fort was in control of Siddhi, Angre and Maratha rule. Finally, it was captured in 1818 by Col. Prother.
Structure of Ghosale Gad Fort
The fort still is in good condition with caves and rock cut water cisterns around the Balekilla hill. There is an escape gate as well, which connects to the narrow wall of the fort. Near the main entrance of the fort, there are two idols of Sharabh. There are cannons on the western side of Balekilla as well.
Visiting Information to Ghosale Gad Fort
There are regular buses and private vehicles available from Roha to Ghosale Gad Fort. Roha Railway Station and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport are the nearest to visit the fort. National Highway 53 connects Roha Town to other parts of the country.
