He made a successful debut in films with the 2013 Mani Ratnam Tamil crime drama "Kadal", alongside debutante Thulasi Nair in the lead. The film received mixed reviews and was declared an above average grosser at the box office. Gautham received appraisal for his debut performance, which also brought him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut at the Filmfare Awards South, in addition to multiple other awards and nominations. The actor was subsequently seen in moderate grossing Tamil film "Yennamo Yedho" and the successful "Vai Raja Vai". "Indrajith", "Rangoon", "Muthuramalingam", "Devarattam" are some of his other films.

Early Life of Gautham Karthik
Gautham Karthik was born on September 12, 1989 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to Tamil film actor Karthik Muthuraman and his ex-wife actress Ragini Karthik. Grandson of Tamil actor R. Muthuraman, Gautham was brought up in Ooty in Tamil Nadu and completed his schooling at a boarding high school there named Hebron School. He later pursued graduation at Christ University, Bangalore, during the period of which he was approached by film maker Mani Ratnam. He had not watched too many Tamil movies since he spent his childhood in a boarding school, neither was he that connected with the Tamil film industry. Gautham completed a Bachelor`s degree in Psychology, English & Media. While in college, he performed as a guitarist and vocalist in his band "Dead End Street".

Acting Career of Gautham Karthik
Reports as early as in 2006 suggested that Karthik Muthuraman was interested in directing a film with his son Gautham in the lead role, though the project never took off. During a press meet in December 2009, Karthik revealed that his son would make his feature film debut in Mani Ratnam`s ensuing venture after completion of the film maker"s bilingual films "Raavan" and "Raavanan". After brief postponement and speculation, Mani Ratnam announced that Gautham would be doing his debut in his crime drama project "Kadal". Gautham briefly took acting lessons from Kalairani and began to shoot for "Kadal" across regions in South India. The film released in February 2013 to mixed reviews. Gautham Karthik`s performance of a deprived youngster was praised by the critics. Gautham"s performance in the film also earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut at the Filmfare Awards South, in addition to awards in the same category at the Vijay Awards, Edison Awards and SIIMA Awards.

Gautham"s second film was "Yennamo Yedho", the Tamil remake of Telugu film "Ala Modalaindi". It is a romantic comedy where the actor featured alongside Rakul Preet Singh and Nikesha Patel. It released in April 2014 to mixed reviews and lukewarm box office response, while Gautham`s performance was praised by critics. His subsequent release was director Aishwarya Dhanush`s "Vai Raja Vai", a psychological thriller that opened in May 2015 to positive reviews and was a commercial success. Some of his other movies are "Mr. Chandramouli", "Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu", "Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren", "Ivan Thanthiran" etc.
