Also known as Fort St. James Banastarim or Benastari Castle, the Fort of Sao Tiago of Banastarim is located on the right bank of Cumbarjua Canal, on the eastern tip of Old Goa in the North Goa district in the state of Goa.
History of Fort of Sao Tiago of Banastarim
The Fort of Sao Tiago of Banastarim was constructed by the local rulers before it was conquered by the Viceroy of Portuguese India, Alfonso de Albuquerque on April, 1512. The Portuguese changed the name of the fort to Fortaleza de Sao Tiago, which roughly translates to the Fortress of St James.
The fort passed from Albuquerque to the Sultan of Bijapur and back to Albuquerque in the same year. Made out of stone and brick, the Fort of Sao Tiago of Banastarim is currently in ruins and is under the control of the Government of India.
