Edward Douglas MacLagan

Edward Douglas MacLagan, also known as Sir Edward Douglas Mac Lagan KCSI KCIE, was the former Governor of Punjab in undivided India under the rule of the British Empire. He was one of the foremost British colonial administrators of British India. He served as the Lieutenant Governor from the year 1919. MacLagan, born in the year 1864, was also a noted writer and academic. He extensively wrote on the history of India. His work supervising the census of Punjab in 1891 comprises ethnographic information. Sir Edward Douglas MacLagan composed a large volume titled A Glossary of the Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North West Frontier, along with Horace Arthur Rose, Superintendent of Ethnography in the Punjab, during the early 20th century. The work also included matter from 1881 census of Denzil Ibbetson.

Edward Douglas MacLagan was appointed as the Chancellor of Punjab University in the year 1919 and served the position till 1924. He also acted as Secretary to the British Government of India in the Education Department, Revenue Secretary, and Chief Secretary to the Government of the Gabe. MacLagan was later appointed as the Governor of the Punjab in British India in the year 1921. He served in office till 1924. MacLagan wrote and edited several literary works which include Monograph on the Gold and Silver Works of the Punjab (1890), The Punjab and its feudatories; The report on the Census (Census of India, 1891), Gazeteer of the Multan District (1902), A Glossary of the Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North West Frontier (1991) and The Jesuits and the Great Mogul (1932).

Sir Edward Douglas MacLagan knighted as the Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCSI). Edward Douglas MacLagan KCSI, KCIE, died in the year 1952.
