East Fort

East Fort is located in Kerala and got its name from its eastern entrance. The fort was built by the king Marthanda Varma of Travancore.

East Fort, KeralaEast Fort is located in Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala state. The fort has been named by the eastern entrance of the fort and it was built by the King of Travancore. The old city was inside the fort on four sides with the Sri Padmanabha Swamy temple at the center. It is said that there were huge metal gates on this entrance to the Fort which was decorated with the symbol of a conch, which was the insignia of the Royal Family of Travancore.

Structure of East Fort
The fort was built in 1747 C.E. by the king Marthanda Varma. The fort is consisted of several palaces. The magnificent palaces of the fort were built in both traditional and western style of architecture. The Ananthavilasam Palace, built by King Vishakam Thirunal in 1880, was constructed in the Baroque and Rococo styles of architecture. Other integral parts of the fort include the Kuthiramalika or the horse palace and the Navarathri Mandapam, which hosts the annual ten day Navaratri celebration. Kuthiramalika palace got its name due to the wooden carved structures of prancing horses along the entire length of its upper floors.
