Dharani Kalotsav also known as "Dharani Dance Festival" is the celebration of the rich cultural heritage of India through performing arts. This annual festival is organized by Society Dharani, a cultural organization located in Kochi region of Kerala. The festival commences on 1st of February and lasts for five days.
Dharani School of Performing Arts
Dharani School of Performing Arts was established in the year 1987 by Mrs. Shymala Surendran, an eminent dancer, for creating awareness and promoting the exquisite arts of India including Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam, Carnatic music, Veena recital and many more. In the year 2000, "Society Dharani" was set up as a subsidiary of Dharani School of Performing Arts. Society Dharani was introduced with the aim of organizing delightful performances of art maestros of India in the field of traditional dance and music. Lecture demonstrations by the artistes themselves are held in between the programs. Students of Dharani School are exposed to as many performing arts as possible through these programs and lecture demonstrations. The Dharani Society has also been very successful in its motive to bring awareness and in bringing up appreciations for the well-preserved classical arts of the country.
Celebration of Dharani Kalotsav
Dharani Kalotsav starts on the day of the formation of Kerala state, 1st November. The day is also known as "Kerala Piravi Day". Over years, the festival has been graced by the eminent artists of India such as Priyadarshini Govind, Malavika Sarukkai, Ustaad Zakir Hussain, Dr. Kunnakudi Vyadyanathan, Padmabhushan Amala Shankar Maya Rao, Padma Bhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan, Dhananjayans, Dr. Vyjayanthimala Bali, Anita Ratnam and many others.
