Located in the southern state of India, Karnataka, Devanahalli is a small town. It is situated at a distance of 35 km.on the outskirts of Bangalore. Previously, this place was known by various names, Devanadoddi, Devanapura, Yusufabad.
According to the 2001 census report, Devanahalli had a population of 23,190 inhabitants. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48% of the population. In Devanahalli, 12% of the population is less than six years of age. The literacy rate of this place is 66%, which is higher than the national average literacy rate, which is 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 73% while the female literacy rate is 58%.
The town is historically significant as Devanahalli is the birthplace of Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan was born here in 1750. It was during his reign that this place was called Yusufabad. The Devanhalli fort built in 1501 is a historical monument of great significance as it was the seat of administration of the empire. Other attractions of the place are an old mosque; a temple built in Dravidian style, which has carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana and a monument in memory of Tipu Sultan. Devanahalli has an institute called the Shilpakala Shala, which provides training in traditional sculpture and painting.
Devanhalli is the site of the new Bangalore International Airport, which is to be inaugurated in April 2008.
