Daltonganj

Daltonganj is the most populated town in Jharkhand. It is the headquarters of Palamu division and Palamu district. It is also the subdivision and block of the same name called Daltonganj. The town is situated on the banks of the North Koel River.

Daltonganj is located at 24.03 degree north to 84.07 degree East latitude. It has an average elevation of 215 meters. Daltonganj is named after Colonel Edward Tuite Dalton, a British anthropologist and the District Commissioner of Chota Nagpur Plateau Region. He was the District Commissioner in 1861, during the rule of British Empire in India. He established this town after clearing Bijra Bagan that is the dense forest. Now the name of Daltonganj is changed to Medininagar named after the king Medani Rai.

The Chero dynasty ruled this region for a long period in the modern Jharkhand region. The most famous among Chero rulers was Medani Rai. The Palamau Fort is a major historical landmark in this area as well as Shahpur Fort.

The famous Betla National Park is located about 26 km from the Daltonganj town. The park is well known for tigers, and comes under the Palamau Tiger Project, better known as the Palamau Tiger Reserve. There is another scenic picnic spot nearby Daltongunj is Kechki. This place is located about 18 kilometers from Daltonganj, at the confluence of the Koel River and the Auranga River. Netarhat is a scenic plateau covered with thick forests. This is also situated near Daltonganj and beside that Barwadih is also located. It is a beautiful summer resort known for its picturesque dusk and dawn.
