History of Calcutta Swimming Club
Calcutta Swimming Club was built in the year 1887 under the name Calcutta Swimming Bath by order of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
Architecture of Calcutta Swimming Club
The present structure of Calcutta Swimming Club was founded by Walter Davis, a partner of Hamilton and Company, who was also the first Secretary of the Club. The Lieutenant Governor of Bengal was the Head of Calcutta Swimming Club from its inception until 1923 when Mr. N. Hamilton was elected as its first President.
Golden Jubilee of Calcutta Swimming Club
Calcutta Swimming Club had celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1937. It was renamed the Calcutta Swimming Club in 1941, in appreciation of its contribution to the Second World War effects.
Membership of Calcutta Swimming Club
In colonial era, Calcutta Swimming Club would not accept Indians as members even after independence. This changed in 1964, when Maharaja of Cooch Behar was inducted as its first Indian member. In 1976, PT Basu was elected as the First Indian President of Calcutta Swimming Club.
Contribution of Calcutta Swimming Club
Calcutta Swimming Club has indoor swimming pools, other indoor sports, a discothèque, health parlour, bar and banquet hall. Calcutta Swimming Club also boasts an open-air swimming pool that is one of the largest not only in India but also in Asia. Calcutta Swimming Club organizes colourful Christmas and New Year parties every year. Not only that Calcutta Swimming Club organises many cultural events with the Bengali and Anglo Indian Community in the Kolkata. Calcutta Swimming Club also gives the promotion to the posh swimmers of Kolkata, to play in the Asiads, Commonwealth and the Olympics.
