Bijjala II

Bijjala II (1130 - 1167 CE) ruled as the Mahamandalesvara. He ruled over Karhada and Tardavadi designations given to territories within the Chalukya kingdom. Post death of Vikramaditya VI he declared independence. Bijjala is considered as Mahabhujabalachakravarti in the Chikkalagi inscription. By the time of Chalukya Taila III took over Bijjala`s attempts towards independence had spread to other feudatories as well. By 1162 CE Bijjala II managed to drive Taila III out of Kalyani that was the capital of Chalukyas. He assumed titles like Sriprithvivallabha and Parameshvara. He also shifted his capital from Mangalavada to Kalyani and was known as Basavakalyan.

However his independence was short lived. He ruled from 1162 CE to 1167 CE as a sovereign ruler. He had clashes with Hoysala Narasimha I, Pandya chief of Uchchangi, Seunas and the Chola`s and the chieftains of Andhra and Kalinga.

Some literary evidences indicate that he was a Jaina. He was a Hindu Shaiva as per epigraphical records. However he was a Shaivite and did not agree with the revolutionary ideas of Basavanna. His rule was marked with domestic and social disorder.
