The fortress is oval shaped and is situated at an elevation of 600 feet. It covers a total area of 300 square yards. The geographical coordinate of the site is latitude 17.4648°N 74.4063°E.

Bhushangad Fort was constructed during the rule of Singhan II of the Seuna Yadava Dynasty of Devagiri. However, the structure was extensively fortified by Shivaji in the year 1676. There is a temple of Harinai Devi, which is a form of Goddess Durga, in the premises of the fort. The Goddess was worshipped was the family deity of the Kulkarnis. The fort of Bhushangad also includes a temple devoted to Lord Hanuman, also known as Maruti.
