Bharatgad Fort

Bharatgad Fort is located 18 km away from Malvan in the Sindhudurg District of Maharashtra on the southern bank of Gad River. The fort is spread over an area of 4-5 acres of land and is covered with mango orchard. Bharatgad Fort is now a private property. The gates and 9 bastions of the fort are in good state. The entire fort campus is protected by 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep moat. The "balekilla", located at the center of the fort, is protected by a 10 feet high wall and four strong bastions. There are a well, a gunpowder storeroom, grain store room and a Mahapurush temple inside the balekilla. There is also a cave and hidden door inside the fort.

History of Bharatgad Fort
Shivaji Maharaj visited this place in the year 1670. Due to water crisis on the Masure Hill, he abandoned the site to build the fort. Then in 1680, Wadikar Phonda Sawant decided the build the fort, as a result of which, the fort was completed in 1701. In 1748 Tulaji Angre, the son of Kanhoji Angre tried to capture the fort. In 1818, captain Hutchhinson captured this fort and found that the well on the fort was devoid of water.

Regular buses are also available to Malvan from the major cities of Maharashtra. National Highway 16 connects Malvan to other major parts of the country.
