History of Bhagwantgad Fort
To check on the activities of Sawants of Sawantwadi, the Bhagwantgad Fort was built by Pant Pratinidhi. The Bhagwantgad Fort was constructed right after the Sawants had built the Bharatgad Fort in the village of Masure on the southern bank of the Kalaval creek. Initially, the Bhagwantgad Fort was under the control of the Chhatrapati of Kolhapur and within a few years, the fort was brought under the Sawants of Sawantwadi.

In 1748 Tulaji Angre, the son of Kanhoji Angre tried to capture the fort but, was unsuccessful due to strong resistance of 18 months from the fort commander. And eventually after that by 1818, the fort came under the administration of the British government. Currently in ruins, the Bhagwantgad Fort is under the control of the Government of India. The gates and bastion of the fort are in a ruined state and the only structure in good condition is the Siddheshwar Temple, which is located within the premises of the Bhagwantgad Fort.
