Attiveri Bird Sanctuary

Attiveri Bird Sanctuary located in Karnataka is home to a variety of birds. The sanctuary was formed due to the construction of a dam across Tayawwanahalla in Attiveri.

Attiveri Bird Sanctuary, KarnatakaAttiveri Bird Sanctuary is around 15 km from Mundgod in Kalghatgi taluk of Dharwad district of Uttara Karnataka. It is located at a distance of 400 Kms from Bengaluru. The sanctuary spreads over an area of about 2.23 sq kms. The Attiveri reservoir is located around the sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to 79 species of birds including migratory birds from 22 countries.

The Attiveri Reservoir was formed as a result of the construction of a dam across Tayawwanahalla in the village of Attiveri. This reservoir attracts many birds, especially aquatic species and was therefore developed as a bird sanctuary.

The Attiveri Bird Sanctuary houses a variety of birds like Indian shag, cattle egret, little cormorant, spoonbill, pied kingfisher, white ibis, white-breasted kingfisher, common grey hornbill and common swallow. Even the agricultural fields surrounding the sanctuary attract a variety of aquatic creatures that serve as main source of food for the birds of the sanctuary. The part of the sanctuary surrounding the reservoir has deciduous forests. The different species found here are A. leucophlea, Artocarpus integrifolius, Albizzia lebbeck, Acacia arabica, Dalbergia latifolia, Bombax malabarica, Tectona grandis, Borassus flabellifer and Bambusa arundianacea.

The best time to visit the Attiveri Bird sanctuary is between November and March. Attiveri Bird Sanctuary is well connected by roads.
