Annada Thakur was a famous saint who was born in a Brahmin family at Chittagaon, Bangladesh and came to the city of Kolkata for the first time with an aim to study Ayurvedic medicine against the consent of his family. He spent some years in Kolkata for studying Ayurvedic medicine, though he never practiced as an Ayurvedic doctor, even after receiving a degree in Ayurveda.
The life of Annada Thakur turned to spiritualism and religiousness during the time he was staying in Kolkata and he went into trance for the first time, during this time only. He was into trance for a long period of one week and during that time; he did narrate poems to Goddess Kali, Lord Krishna and Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The gods and goddesses told him to shave his head and bring the statue lying in the mud of Eden Garden, after taking bathe in the Ganges. Though, Annada brought back the statue to his home at that time, he found the statue to turn out to be a statue of nude Kali or Bhavani, in the later period.
Annada Thakur has done a great job to travel all across India for a long period and he became significantly successful to lament the infighting and hostility between the two Hindu religious groups like Shakta sect and Vaishnava. Annada Thakur established one of the most famous religious destinations in and around Kolkata, named the Adya peeth at Dakshineswar, in the year of 1914. The people of West Bengal have been admiring him for his devotion to the Goddess Kali, over the years.
