Animesh Lochan, located inside the temple complex of Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya, Bihar is a major place of religious significance. There are significant places associated with incidents immediately followed to Lord Buddha`s enlightenment. The Lord spent the succeeding seven weeks meditating at seven different spots in the vicinity.
Animesh Lochan Chaitya is a miniature of Mahabodhi Temple, standing slightly off the walk way towards the main temple. A standing image of unblinking Lord Buddha is enshrined in the Hall of Animesh Lochan Chaitya to commemorate the spot where Buddha spent a week gazing at Mahabodhi Tree in gratitude after he attained enlightenment.
Legend of Animesh Lochan Chaitya
Animesh Lochan Chaitya is one of the places associated with enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Legend has it that during the second week of enlightenment within the cycle of meditation, Lord Buddha spent seven days at Animesh Lochan Chaitya place looking at the Bodhi Tree. It is believed that during this time, he did not blink his eye even once. The place has thus been named Animesh Lochan which means "open eyes" highlighting the significance of this event in Buddha"s life.
Another noteworthy attraction here is the Ratnachankrama which is the place between the Bodhi tree and Animesh Lochan Chaitya where he walked.
