Ammapettai serves as an important pilgrimage centre with several temples located in the close vicinity of the town. Here majority of the temples are dedicated to goddess Shakti. The town has been named Ammapettai for the presence of Shakti worshipped in the form of Amma, the mother. The region is thought to be the abode of goddess Shakti. Another temple known as Meenakshi Sokkanadar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located on the banks of Kaveri River and is believed to have been built by the rulers of the Pandya Dynasty. The temple dates back to the almost 1000 years and is said to be the first Shiva temple to have been constructed on the banks of Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu. Another ancient temple situated behind the Shiva temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
