Alfred William Begbie

Alfred William Begbie served as the Lieutenant Governor of the North Western Provinces, which was an administrative area in British dominated India that succeeded the Ceded and Conquered Provinces and existed from 1836 to 1902, after which the region became the Agra Province in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. Begbie was also one of the prominent members of the British Indian Civil Service.

Early Life of Alfred William Begbie
He was nominated to the East India Company College on 14th January 1818. The East India Company College was established in February 1806 in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire, England. The institute served as the training establishment for the Honourable East India Company (HEIC). Alfred William Begbie passed the Public Examination with good credit from Haileybury College in Hertfordshire on 28 May 1818. He was honoured with prize in Bengalese and good credit in other departments in the Public Examination at the East India Company College on 3 December 1819.

Career of Alfred William Begbie
Alfred William Begbie became the Assistant to Magistrate of Northern Division of Bundelkhand (Bundelcund) on 16 February 1821. Later he was appointed as the Register of Civil Court of Northern Division of Bundelkhand on 10 August 1822. Eventually Alfred William Begbie was appointed as the Deputy Collector of Banda on 26 November 1825. Later in the year 1837, he was nominated as Civil and Session Judge of Mynpoorie by Lieutenant Governors of the North Western Provinces. He also acted as the Judge at the Nizamat Adalat of North Western Provinces from January to June 1853. Begbie served as the Lieutenant Governor of the North Western Provinces as an In charge Acting Governor. He held the position from 10 October 1853 to 7 November 1853.

Personal Life of Alfred William Begbie
Alfred William Begbie was married with Margaret Anna on 30 August 1825 at Allahabad. She was the daughter of James Grant. The couple had a daughter named Frances Charlotte. Margaret Anna died on 23 June 1828 at Humeerpore. Later Begbie married for the second time with Margaret Watt, who was the eldest daughter of the Isaac Watt. They were married on 22 February 1836 at Allahabad. The couple had a daughter named Gertrude Emma on 7 February 1842.
