Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century B.C. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 9th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the food as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than knowledge or understanding. Sanatkumara replied that food is greater than power and strength. Sanatkumara explained that if a man fasts for ten days, he might remain alive, might be able to for were one to fast for ten nights he would be unable to see, to hear, to think, to consider, to act and to acquire knowledge. However, when he consumes food he is able to see, to hear, to think, to consider, to act and to acquire knowledge. Thus, one must meditate on food as Brahman. He is then able to obtain the world rich in food and drink. He who knows this and realises it becomes free and reaches as far as food reaches.
