![]() Economy of Smit The farmers of Smit usually practise Jhum cultivation and grow wide varieties of vegetation, which contributes to the economy of the state. The farmers also tend to grow considerable amount of spices which are mainly exported to other states and thus in turn contributes to the state economy. In Smit, cottage industries are also quite popular along with sericulture weaving and animal husbandry, which are widely practiced by the villagers. The region of Smit is also a site for mining. Culture of Smit Being the cultural core of the Khasi tribe in the north eastern state of India, the famous festival of Nongkrem is done here. Nongkrem is basically a festive dance form that is associated mostly with goat sacrifice and is held in Smit. This festival happens during the month of November and attracts tourists from all over.
