Located in the city of Nellore in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, the Bara Shaheed Dargah is a shrine that is known to have an eid- gah in its compound, which is an open air enclosure that is reserved for Islamic prayers.
Etymology of Bara Shaheed Dargah
In Urdu language, the name Bara Shaheed Dargah roughly translates to the Shrine of 12 martyrs.
History of Bara Shaheed Dargah
The Persian inscribed stone plate in the campus of the Bara Shaheed Dargah reveals that there were 12 tombs of warriors, who were part of the first Muslim army to enter into the region and were martyred in the battle.
The Bara Shaheed Dargah is famous for its 3 days annual festival of Rotiyaan ki Eid or Rottela Panduga, which is observed in the month of Muharram in hijri and attracts tourists from in and around the country. The devotees who had their wishes fulfilled exchange roti with those who had similar wish as theirs and was completed. This is followed by reading verses from the Holy Quran in the dargah.
