Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 7th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about understanding as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara understand about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than meditation to which Sanatkumara replied that understanding or knowledge is greater than consideration. It is through understanding and knowledge that men know the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda, the Atharva Veda, the itihasa and puranas, grammar, rituals, the science of number, physics, chronology, logic, polity, technology, the sciences cognate to the Vedas, the science of spirits, archery, astronomy, the science of antidotes, the fine arts, the heaven, the earth, the air, the sky, the water, light, the god, men, birds, grasses and trees, wild beasts, as also worms, insects and ants, virtue, vice, truth, untruth, the honest and the dishonest, the good and the bad, the pleasant and the unpleasant, the food and the taste. One must thus, meditate on understanding. He who is aware of it and realises this becomes free and reaches as far as understanding and knowledge reaches.
