Naming of Thathri
The word Thathri derived from the Kashmiri word "Thath". Apart from having ample forests, the town contains many small streams flowing through its various parts. It is located on the bank of the Chenab River.
Location of Thathri
Thathri and its valley are located in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountain Range, about 85 km from Batote. The town has reservoirs of marble which lends to its nickname, Marble Town.
History of Thathri
Thathri is located in foothills of Himalayan Mountain Range. In ancient times, i.e during the rule of Panchala kingdom, which derived the name Pir Panjal Range, there were the fields of paddy of nearby villages. The people from several parts of ancient Jammu and Kashmir and modern Pakistan came here to settle for the conducive climate. They build their houses in place of fields. and it became a village namely "Thathri". Now, this place is referred as the hill top city in Jammu and Kashmir. By time population increases and the people who now settled in Thathri made it business place. Slowly, Thathri became Tehsil of District Doda. In 2011 Thathri was titled as town. In the same year the population census reported that Thathri have 92 above villages.

The total population of Thathri Tehsil according to the Population Census in the year 2011 is 42,935 living in 6,797 Houses, spread across total 33 villages and 33 panchayats. The male population is about 22,007 and female population is about 20,928.
Geography of Thathri
Thathri is one of the towns in Thathri Tehsil in Doda District in Jammu and Kashmir. Thathri is the main town for the Thathri Tehsil and also Tehsil Head. Thathri is 30.4 km far from its district main city Doda. It is 147 km far from its state main city Srinagar, the capital city of Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir. The nearby villages of Thathri are Kansoo (1.2 km), Kharangal (5.2 km), Tanta (5.5 km), Sinoo (5.9 km), Chanyas (6.2 km). Nearest towns are Thathri (14.3 km), Bhaderwah (19.8 km), Bhalessa (Gandoh)(20.5 km), Gundana (28.3 km). Bathri, Bhallara, Bhatogra, Bhatoli, Bhella, and Chagsoo are the villages along with this village in the same Thathri Tehsil.
Culture of Thathri
The people of Thathri use Urdu language, Bhadrawahi language, Kashmiri language, Sarazi language. Noon Chai (commonly known as Namkeen Chai) or Pink Tea is a famous beverage of the people of Thathri. The people of the villages who work here from morning to evening start their work by drinking the tea at homes and at hotels. "Noon Chai" (noon-salt, chai-tea) is a part of Kashmiri culture to drink this beverage 2-3 times a day with traditional Kashmiri breads and pastries like Lavasa, Sheermaal, Kandir Chot, Bakarkhani and Kulcha. Noon chai is traditionally made from special tea leaves, milk, salt, and cooked in a samavar. A pinch of baking soda is added to help give it more of a pronounced pink colour. A recent variant preparation of this tea also includes sugar but it is not traditionally consumed in Thathri.
