Early Life of Ashok Selvan
Ashok Selvan was born on November 8, 1989, in the Chennimalai town of Erode district, Tamil Nadu, India. He moved to Chennai when 3 years old and completed his schooling at Santhome Higher Secondary School. He later completed his graduation in Visual Communications from Loyola College of Arts and Science in Chennai. During college, Ashok participated in short films, completing a dozen short films as an actor as well as directing a few, one of which, ‘Green’, won Best Film at the 2012 International Tamil Thoth Conference held in Singapore.
Film Career of Ashok Selvan
After graduating from college, Ashok Selvan sought opportunities of working in films as an actor, and auditioned for roles, including in Prakash Raj's production ‘Inidhu Inidhu’ and Bharat Bala's ‘19th Step’, but was rejected. During this period, he applied to work as an assistant director to A. R. Murugadoss, and was given the opportunity to feature in a few scenes in the director's venture ‘7aum Arivu’, as the friend of Suriya’s character. His scenes, though, did not make the final version. He was also featured in the title card of Chakri Toleti's ‘Billa 2’, with a childhood picture of his that used to represent a younger Ajith Kumar's titular character. He had also unsuccessfully auditioned for a role in ‘Pizza’, before Nalan Kumarasamy offered him the role of Kesavan in his black comedy film ‘Soodhu Kavvum’, in 2013, after seeing him in a commercial. He featured alongside an ensemble cast of Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha and Sanchita Shetty. The film became a commercial success, with Ashok being described as "fantastic" in his role of an unemployed graduate.
Ashok Selvan was then selected to replace Vaibhav Reddy in Deepan Chakravarthy's psychological thriller ‘Pizza II: Villa’, the second film in C. V. Kumar's ‘Pizza’ franchise. Portraying an English novel writer in the film, the film depicted the story of eerie happenings in a villa owned by Ashok's character. In order to portray the role of a 30-year-old writer, he put on weight and grew his hair within two weeks. The film opened to positive reviews and an above average box office performance, with a critic noting that "Ashok delivers an outstanding performance". He also received a nomination for Vijay Award for Best Debut Actor, in Vijay Awards of Tamil Cinema. He collaborated with C. V. Kumar again in his third film, ‘Thegidi’, a murder mystery story directed by debutant Ramesh. Portraying a detective, Ashok starred opposite Janani Iyer, also winning positive reviews for his acting in the film. He later made a cameo appearance of a hospital paramedic in ‘Orange Mittai’ and was next seen in Sathyasiva’s directed film ‘Savaale Samaali’, alongside Bindu Madhavi. He has announced that he rejected over 40 scripts post the success of ‘Thegidi’, before selecting Sathyasiva's film. He next appeared in another C. V. Kumar production, comedy film ‘144’, alongside Shiva, Oviya and Shruthi Ramakrishnan. The film received overall average reviews. His subsequent projects include ‘Pirai Thaediya Naatkal’, ‘Kootathil Oruthan’ and ‘Sila Samayangalil’, slated to release in 2016.
