Payer Temple is a small shrine situated about 3 kms in the south of Pulwama district near Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir. This temple is named after the Payer Village, where it is located. This village is situated 18 km from Pampore and 18 km northeast of Shopian. The Payer Temple is also called as the "Payech Temple" by several travellers. The Payer Temple is one of the most popular religious attractions of Pulwama.
Structure of Payer Temple
The Payer Temple is 6.30 m high. Its architecture matches that of Pandrethan Temple, this being the best preserved mediaeval Kashmiri shrine. The shrine is open on all 4 sides and consists of a single flight of steps. The crowning feature of this temple is a conventionalized water-pot. It is believed that this whole temple is carved out of one single stone. Regarding the architecture of this temple, it is said that it has been carved out of a monolith stone and dates back to the 10th Century.
How to Reach Payer Temple
Nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi railway station, station is well connected to all other major stations in India. It is situated at a distance of about 340 km from the town. Bus will be the convenient mode as one can get buses from Srinagar; the average distance is around 340 km from Jammu to Pulwama. Srinagar Airport, also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport, is the closest air base to Pulwama. It is well connected to important cities and one can hire taxis from the airport to reach the town of Pulwama.
