Surathkal is the abode of one of the premier technical institutes of India namely the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), which was formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC). Vidyadayanee High School and Govindadasa College run by Hindu Vidyadayanee Sangha are also important educational centres of Surathkal. Other notable institutes include Sri Mahalingeshwara English medium school and Holy Family School.
Surathkal hosts a magnificent beach having a curving shoreline. A lighthouse stands at the end of the beach over a rocky hillock which offers panoramic view of the countryside and the vast sea around. Surathkal beach boasts resplendent sunsets and picturesque views of beautiful nature enclosing the place. The morning vista of fishermen from the neighbouring hamlets, launching their fishing boats into the sea is also delightful.
Tourism in Surathkal
There are a number of tourist spots in and around Surathkal. The ancient temple of Sadashiva standing atop a hillock is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Astha Matha, established by Saint Madhvacharya, is another attraction which boasts its intricate trellis work in the architecture. One of the oldest parishes known as the Sacred Heart Church is also visited by many tourists. Sasihitulu village is located near Surathkal which offers a magnificent view of the Pavanje River flowing into the Arabian Sea forming an estuary. Moodbidri, situated nearby, is an important site of Jainism since 15th century and shelters many ancient Jain temples still in intact condition.
Surathkal can be conveniently reached by roadways availing the bus service from Mangalore city. Nearest airport is located in Mangalore at a distance of 15 kilometres from Surathkal. The New Mangalore sea port lies at a distance of 6 kilometres. The railway station at Surathkal is situated between Mangalore and Udupi on Konkan railway route.
