Legend of Peddamma Temple
Legend says that the supreme ascetic, Lord Shiva, opened his third eye after being disturbed by the hostility of Mahishasura. This unleashed the fire of doom. However even after this, the Mahishasura’s march could not be arrested. Thus a bright stream of lightning emerged from the mouths of Lord Brahma, the creator, which took the form of Goddess Brahmi. Subsequently all the other gods put on their powers to create a female form Mahishasura Mardini, Durga, who later killed the demon Mahishasura. The goddess is thus greatly revered at Peddamma temple.
