Indian actress who is known for popular Bollywood flicks like Chitchor and Gopal Krishna in the 1970s. She has starred in several critically acclaimed Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu films. Her portrayals of roles depicting middle-class natural beauty received much appreciation. Apart from films Zarina Wahab has also appeared in many television serials.
Early Life of Zarina Wahab
Zarina Wahab was born on 17th of July 1959 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to a Muslim family. She has two sisters and one brother. She has received training at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Zarina Wahab is fluent with multiple languages including English, Hindi, Urdu and Telugu.
Career of Zarina Wahab
Zarina Wahab initially met Raj Kapoor at the FTII and did not receive fair compliments from him about her appearance. Raj Kapoor was not much impressed with her looks. Zarina Wahab then worked extensively on her appearance and began attending various events of the Hindi film industry along with numerous film parties. Her efforts bore fruits as she got noticed and bagged a role in the Dev Anand directed movie Ishq Ishq in the year 1974. However her first success arrived in the year 1976 when she featured in Basu Chatterjee's romantic musical flick titled Chitchor alongside Amol Palekar. In 1977 she appeared in the Bollywood flick Gharaonda alongside Jalal Agha, Amol Palekar and Dr. Shreeram Lagoo under the direction of Bhimsain Khurana. Her performance in the film earned her a Filmfare Best Actress nomination.
Following this Zarina Wahab appeared in a number of Hindi, Tamil and Telugu movies till 1995. In the year 2004 she made her comeback in the Bollywood with the film Dil Maange More. She made her comeback in the arena of Malayalam films in 2009 with the romantic movie Calendar in which she appeared along with Prithviraj Sukumaran and Navya Nair under the direction of Mahesh. In the subsequent year she portrayed the role of Rizwan Khan's mother in the Karan Johar directed My Name is Khan. For the movie she won Global Indian Film and Television Honors for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Female. Other Hindi flicks in which she has acted include Rakta Charitra, Agneepath, I, Me, aur Main, Himmatwala, Club 60 and many more. Zarina Wahab has also appeared in several television serials such as Yahaan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli, Virrudh, Zaara, Maayka and others.
Personal Life of Zarina Wahab
Zarina Wahab is married to the Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi whom she met on the sets of Kalank Ka Tika. They are married since the year 1986 and have a daughter named Sana and a son named Sooraj.
