Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is amongst the most renowned wildlife reserves of Himachal Pradesh and it is based in Kullu District in Serai Forest Division. Mountain ridges surround this wildlife sanctuary on all sides except the western end, including the Sirikand Dhar to the south-eastern part and the Mathaun Dhar on the north-eastern portion of the sanctuary. On 17th June, 1976, it was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in the revenue records of Himachal Pradesh. The total area occupied by the sanctuary measures about 61 square kilometres and is famous for its numerous hot springs existent here consisting of Hans Kund, Khirganga and Mantalai Rakti Sar. This sanctuary is connected to the Great Himalayan National Park on its southern end.

There exist several types of flora in Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary including Alpine, Deodar, Mixed Coniferous Forests and Ban Oak. However, visitors to this sanctuary will also be pleasantly welcomed by lush greenery of this part of the nation.
Fauna of Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary
Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary provides safe refuge and natural habitats to a large number of wild creatures, of which the Himalayan Tahr can be observed in a vast quantity. Other beasts present here are Snow Leopard, Jungle Cat, Weasel, Himalayan Brown Bear, Himalayan Rhesus Macaque, Brown Bear, Barking Deer and many others.
