Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 6th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about meditation as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than consideration to which Sanatkumara replied that meditation (dhyana) is greater than consideration. He explained that the earth meditates as if in reflection, the sky meditates as if in reflection; the heaven meditates as if in reflection; the water meditates as if in reflection; the mountains meditates as if in reflection, even gods and men meditates as if in reflection. He who attains greatness among others is said to have attained a part of meditation. Thus, while there are men who are unmindful, quarrelsome, cruel and abusive, great men appear to have attained a share of meditation. One must meditate on meditation. He who realises this becomes free and reaches as far as meditation reaches.
