Geography of Mamit District
The major rivers of the district are Teirei, Tut, Tlawng, Khawthlangtuipui, Langkaih, all of which flow from south to north direction. The mountains in the district also stretch in the same direction. Dense forest covers the hills and forest products like Bamboo, Timber, Broomstick etc are found in ample amount. The temperature of the district is moderate and varies from 9 degree to 24 degree centigrade in winters and during summers it varies from 24 degree to 36 degree centigrade. The district receives abundant rainfall. A number of natural calamities including landslide, cyclonic storm and hailstorm have also affected the district in past years.
Demography of Mamit District
According to 2011 census, the population of the Mamit District is 86,364 with male population of 44,828 and female population of 41,536. Census of 2011 states that there is an increase of 37.56 percent in the population of the district. The population density of the district has been estimated to be 29 people per square kilometre. The district presently has 3,025 square kilometres of areas under its administration.
Literacy rate in the district is found to be 84.93 percent where male literacy rate is 89.13 and female literacy rate is 80.35. 60,191 people in the district are literate with 32,977 males and 27,214 females. Sex ratio in the district as per 2011 census is 927 females per 1000 male whereas child sex ratio is 979 girls per 1000 boys. Children under 6 years of age in the district number 15,495 which constitute 17.94 percent of the district population. 14,899 people of Mamit district are the residents of urban areas which constitute 17.25 percent with male and female population of 7,693 and 7,206. Sex ratio of the urban population of the district is 937 whereas child sex ratio is 955.
Child population is 2,303 in urban areas where 1,178 are male and 1,125 are female and is 15.31 percent of urban population. 82.75 percent population of Mamit District dwells in rural areas which comprises of about 71,465 people where 37,135 are male and 34,330 are female. Sex ratio of rural area is 924 females per 1000 males. Child population of Mamit district is 13,192 with 6,650 males and 6,542 female and constitute about 17.91 percent of rural population. Literacy rate in the rural population is 82.67 percent.
