Pilgrimage Centres in Sarcarsamakulam
Sarcarsamakulam is an important pilgrimage centre with few prominent temples located in the town. The Kaalakaleshwara Temple is one of the important temples situated on the banks of Kousika River. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A statue of Dakshinamoorthy has also been erected here. During the time of Pradosha vrata the temple is visited by devotees from different places. The festival of Sura Samharam is also celebrated in the temple in honour of Lord Muruga. It is organised a week after Diwali.
Another important shrine located in Sarcarsamakulam is the Kavayakaliamman Temple. It is located in the vicinity of Kaalkaleswarar temple. Earlier the temple was known as Kavayanpathi. It was named after the name of King Kavayan. The temple is dedicated to goddess Shakti. She is seen with a trident in one hand and fire in another. Statues of three soldiers cutting off their heads with swords are visible in the prahara of the temple. Few days are regarded as very auspicious for the temple such as Fridays of the Tamil months of Aadi and Thai that falls during the months of July-August and January-February respectively. The Sundays, new moon days and full moon days are also held considered as favourable days. Navratri is celebrated in the temple on a grand scale.
Besides these there are few other temples in Sarcarsamakulam like Veeramachi Amman Temple, Shakti Mariamman Temple, Patthuraasi Amman temple and Mahalakshmi Amman Temple. These temples have been built in the heart of the town of Kovilpalayam. It was earlier an agricultural area. Sri Kaalakaleswara temple was constructed by the rulers of the Chola Dynasty. They built the temple during their reign in Kongu in Tamil Nadu. Later it was looked after by kings of Kongu. The main deity of the temple is Lord Kaalaeswarar. It is a 'self-manifested' or 'swayambhu' idol.
