The Vettangudi Bird sanctuary is located in Sivaganga District in Tamil Nadu. It encompasses Periya Kollukudi Patti, Chinna Kollukudi Patti and Vettangudi Patti tanks spread over an area of 38.4 ha. It was declared a sanctuary in the year 1977 and is they only bird sanctuary located in the Sivaganga District. It is located at a distance of 51 Km from Madurai on Madurai - Melur- Tirupathur road. The sanctuary is situated at 10 deg 10' N latitude and 78 deg 20' E longitude.
Flora and Fauna of Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary
Vettangudi Bird sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. The vegetation of the tank mainly comprises of prosopis. In few places Babul tree and Tamarind tree can also be seen. These trees serve as nesting places and natural breeding habitat for winter migratory birds such as Open billed stork, White ibis, Grey herons, Asian Openbill Stork, Night herons, Darters and Spoon bills. This small drainage basins attracts more than 8,000 winter migratory birds that belong to 217 species. These birds mostly come from European and North Asian countries. The sanctuary is also a habitat for indigenous endangered species that include Painted Stork, Little Cormorant, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Cattle Egret, Common Teal, Spotbills, pintail, and flamingos.
There are accommodation facilities for the tourists. The nearest accommodation facilities are available in Karaikudi, Tirupathur and Madurai.
Vettangudi Bird sanctuary is well connected with all modes of transports. The sanctuary is approachable by road. It is located 51 Kms from Madurai on Madurai - Melur - Tirupathur road. The nearest Railway Stations are at Karaikudi at a distance of 32 Kms and Madurai at a distance of 51 Kms. The nearest Airport is located at Madurai.
