Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains eight chapters. The 4th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states about the will as Brahman. Narada approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman. Narada wished to know what was greater than mind to which Sanatkumara said that the will is greater than mind.
A man first needs to have the will before he thinks in his mind. Then he utters speech and then performs the actions. All the sacred hymns are incorporated in a name and all sacrifices are incorporated in the sacred hymns. Will is the main goal of all beginnings. From will everything begins and in will they all abide. The heaven, air, akasa, water and fire are willed. The rain wills through the will of the heaven and earth. Through the will of the rain the food wills, through the will of food, the pranas will; through the will of the pranas, the sacred hymns will; through the will of the sacred hymns, the sacrifices will; through the will of the sacrifices, the world wills; through the will of the world, everything wills. One must thus meditate on will. One who knows this and realises it becomes free and reaches as far as will reaches.
