Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 4th Khanda of Chapter Eight of Chandogya Upanishad states about the Brahman as a dam. It explains that the Self is the dam or a bridge. It supports the preservation of all from destruction. The bridge cannot be crossed by day or by night, or by disease, or by death, nor grief, nor virtue, or vice. All the evils depart from it as the world of Brahman is free from all evil. Crossing this bridge the blind cease to be blind, the wounded cease to be wounded, the afflicted cease to be afflicted. Therefore, having reached this dam, the night becomes day; for the World of Brahman is lighted once for all. One who realises this, the region of Brahman belongs to him. For them there is freedom in all the worlds.
