Khatwanga, also known as Dilipa is the son of Visivasaha. He belonged to the solar race and was a powerful king. The King had a son named Dirghabahu.
Legend of Khatwanga
Once there was a war between the Gods and the Demons. Khatwanga assisted the God’s army to fight against the demons. The devatas or Gods including Lord Indra came to Khatwanga and asked for help. Khatwanga was a very great warrior. He went to heaven, fought with the demons and killed them. He gave back the heaven to Indra once again. The Gods were very happy to get their domicile back. They offered Khatwanga a boon.
Khatwanga asked god the duration of his life or how long he will live. The Gods replied that he has only one hour left of his life. On hearing this Khatwanga descended to the world of mortals and prayed for final emancipation. He therefore requested to take him to earth. When the king arrived, half of the time was gone and only few minutes remained.
Khatwanga sat in a lotus position like a muni, and concentrated on the lotus-feet of Lord Krishna. Thus, in a moment, he was liberated; and he had a chance to serve the lotus-feet of Krishna. He went to spiritual world. He developed detachment towards all the things to which he was attached, like his relatives, friends, other luxuries and comforts. He meditated upon the Lord Narayana and attained Moksha by chanting the name ‘Govinda’.
Thus, Khatwanga attained liberation and knowledge of truth and united with the three worlds.
