Danu is the name of the daughter of Daksha and mother of the Danavas.

Danu is one of the daughters of Daksha and mother of the Danavas. According to Padma Purana, she was also one of the 13 daughters who were married to Sage Kashyapa. Danu’s sons were Danavas. The hundred sons of Danu came to be known as Danavas. The Danavas were thus cousins to the Daityas and also to the Adityas</b>. In the Danava line were born demons like the Poulamas and Kalakeyas. Some of her main sons are – Dwimurdha, Shambar, Arishta, Hayagreev, Vibhavasu, Ayomukha, Shankushira, Swarbhanu, Kapil, Arun, Pulomaa, Vrishparva, Ekchakra, Anutapan, Dhumrakesh, Virupaksh, Viprachitti, Durjaya. Swarbhanu's daughter Suprabha was married to Namuchi and Vrishparva's Sharmishtha was married to Yayati - Nahusha's son. Danu's son Vaishwanar had four beautiful daughters - Upadanavi, Hayashira, Puloma and Kalakeya. Upadaanavee was married to Hiranyaksha and Hayashira was married to Kratu.
In Rig Veda, Danu is also the name of the mother of Vritra, the demonic serpent who was slain bLord Indra along with her son.
