Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 1st Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishadstates about the dialogue between Narada and Sanatkumara. Narada approached Sanatkumara as a disciple and requested him to enlighten him. Sanatkumara wished to know what he already knew. Hence, Narada told him that he was aware of the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda, the Atharva Veda, the epics (Puranas) and ancient lore (Itihasa), the Veda of the Vedas i.e. grammar, the rules of the sacrifices by which the Manes are gratified, the science of numbers, the science of portents, the science of time, logic, ethics, etymology, Brahma Vidya, i.e. the science of pronunciation, ceremonials, prosody, etc., the science of elemental spirits, archery, astronomy, the science of serpents and the fine arts. However, he knew these only by words and thus, wished to know about the real Self, the Supreme Brahman. He had heard that one who realised the Supreme Being, the Brahman remains unaffected from all pains and sorrows. Narada was afflicted with sorrow hence he wished to know about the Supreme Brahman. Sanatkumara told Narada that the later that whatever he had read was merely a name. The Rig Veda; Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda, the epics, Vedas aand all other scriptures are just names. One must meditate on the name, Brahman. Then only one would be able to free himself and reach as far as the name reaches.
