19th Khanda of Chapter Three, Chandogya UpanishadChandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is the part of Chandogya Brahaman that contains ten chapters. The 19th Khanda of Chapter Three of Chandogya Upanishad states about meditation on the Sun as Brahman. According to this, the Sun is the Supreme Brahman. In the beginning the universe was non-existent. Gradually with time it became existent and then started growing and developing. It turned into an egg and it lay for a period of one year. After that it broke open. Of the two halves of the egg-shell, one half was of silver, the other of gold. One half of the egg that was silver became the earth and the other half of the shell that which was of gold became heaven. The thick membrane of the white became the mountains; the thin membrane of the yolk became the mist and the clouds. The veins became the rivers and the fluid in the bladder became the ocean. Finally the Sun, (Aditya) was born and there were shouts of joy from all beings and all objects of desire. One who is aware of this and realises it and meditates on the sun as Brahman will be approached by pleasant sounds and eventually become happy.
