Chandogya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishad written on the Vedic Brahmana period about ninth to eighth century BC. Chandogya Upanishad is associated with Sama Veda. It is ranked ninth in the Muktika canon of hundred and eight Upanishadas. The 17th Khanda of Chapter Seven of Chandogya Upanishad states that Truth depends upon understanding. Narada had approached Sanatkumara to know about the real Self or the Supreme Brahman and upon being instructed he was satisfied with the knowledge. However, Sanatkumara explained him further about ativadi and truth. He told him that when one knows and understands the truth he speaks the truth. However, when one does not understand the truth he does not declare it. Truth can only be said who understands it. Thus, it is knowledge that one must try to acquire and it is worthy of enquiry. On learning this Narada too wished to acquire knowledge and understand it.
